Installing the ventilation cap which forms the centrepiece of the Millennium Dome, designed by Buro Happold Consulting Engineers, was a challenge for Baco Contracts, which developed the fabrication details.
The Egan Report Rethinking Construction was published in July 1998 and patterns regarding take-up of some recommendations are emerging. The report came four years after the Latham Report Constructing the Team - and while it is a follow-on in some areas, it conflicts significantly in others. Typically Latham gave considerable thought to improving contracts which would also reduce conflict. Egan suggests that contracts should often be replaced by regular team working, and therefore reliance on mutual trust and interdependence.
CPD - debate continues
Verulam's postbag has bulged with comment on CPD. Eric Hewitt from Bosham, near Chichester; has some positive proposals for full and relevant training. He writes:
The concerns expressed in Chris Bailey’s letter (2 February 1999) could perhaps be met
by considering the use of the NVQ Level 4 in Civil & Structural Engineering Design
awarded jointly by the Institution and others. This nationally acceptable award starts from the premise of an underpinning knowledge-base of a graduate engineer. Whether it is used to gain the award for the candidate, or as a framework for CPD is a decision for the employer and employee which will depend on a number of factors.
