SIR,-MY reply to Mr. Wollaston’s letter in the current issue of The Structural Engineer, is to suggest that a careful reading of my article in the January number will convince Mr. Wollaston that there is no indication of a practical illustration of the concept in dynamics of “mass without weight,” as the derivation of the formulae clearly shows that the whole of the vertical loads are balanced by the upward reaction.

The object of this test was to ascertain the amount of subsidence of a concrete base when loaded with the load for which it designed to carry, viz, 4 tons per sq. ft. including the weight of the concrete in base. George Coles
