It is always desirable, at the commencement of piling a chosen site, to analyse the bearing values of the ground, and, from the data obtainable when driving or forcing the piles down to the required penetration, to be able to forecast the static test load which could be carried without settlement. Sir,-With reference to Mr. Voce's sand-box test, as described by him in the June number of this periodical, I believe I could carry out the test if the sides of the box were of leather, canvas, or some such material; but his box has stiff sides; assuming they are of half-inch boarding, say a foot deep, how did he bend up part of these sides to conform with the bent-up portion of the base ?
