The subject of this paper is wide and varied and an attempt has been made to embrace only the more general points likely to affect the professional career of the average engineer or architect. Extraordinary legal points frequently arise during a contract and are contested, but for many of these precedents cannot be quoted and the result is generally unsatisfactory to both parties. The architect or engineer concerned may not have a similar case during the rest of his career; such cases have been avoided in this discussion. W.T. Hills
It is always desirable, at the commencement of piling a chosen site, to analyse the bearing values of the ground, and, from the data obtainable when driving or forcing the piles down to the required penetration, to be able to forecast the static test load which could be carried without settlement.
