The Structural Engineer, Volume 87, Issue 3, 2009
The research identifies the role of the structural engineer within green building. The paper begins with an examination of green building and sustainable building to refine the context of the work. From this background clarification the authors define three areas of influence for structural engineers in green building: green team member, green projects, and green design. The greatest ability to influence the building process is found in green design. The five green design strategies identified are design for materials, design for recycling, design for efficiency, design for energy, and design for adaptability. The work operates at the interface of green building and sustainable building. John E. Anderson,BCE, MCE, IABSE Anton Tedesko Fellow Robert Silman, BCE, MCE, IABSE Anton Tedesko Laureate
