This paper describes research carried out to examine the possibility of strengthening an historical stone tower against seismic action. The tower was once the campanile of the Church of the Announziata in Corfu although the bulk of that building now lies in ruins. For the investigation, an analytical model with 3D shell and frame elements (Finite Element Method) was developed capable of modelling the structural behaviour, deformation and stress distribution of the tower under static and dynamic loading. Thereafter, the piers of the tower were checked in compliance with Eurocode 6 and methods were sought for strengthening the structural system. More analyses were carried out and rechecking of the structure was performed to assess the degree of improvement these methods would achieve in the structure.
