Jo' Kenward and Craig Mills describe the design, scoping and construction of the 'Go Between Bridge' in Brisbane, Australia, part of the Hale Street Link project.

Synopsis

The Hale Street Link project provides a new river crossing connecting the Hale Street section of the Inner City By-Pass and Coronation Drive (on the north side of Brisbane River) to South Brisbane and the developing West End areas adjacent to Montague Road.

The preliminary design, scoping, final design and construction works were undertaken under an Alliance form of contract. The final design started in May 2008 and completion of construction was achieved in June 2010 as originally programmed and within the project target cost.

The project includes the ‘Go Between Bridge’ – a new 274m long, three span, pre-stressed segmental box, twin deck bridge over the Brisbane River with a central span of 117m. Whilst a common form of construction, the design had to address the effects of highly variable ground conditions across the site, asymmetric loading in flood conditions and loading effects arising from the need to provide equitable access/DDA compliant gradients of no more than 5%, which required variable height elevated walkways to be provided on the slender deck cantilevers.
