Since 1968, the Structural Awards have celebrated the very best in structural engineering worldwide. To this day, winning an award brings a huge amount of honour to the teams, who are both proud and grateful to have their hard work recognised amongst their peers.
Over the years, structural engineering trends have evolved to meet the requirements of an ever-changing world. As more technology and resources have become available, these advancements have allowed for greater innovation. While the focus of a structural engineer remains the same - to deliver realistic, cost-effective, structurally safe and resilient solutions - it has become essential to acknowledge the associated social and environmental impacts.
As we celebrate Earth Day this month, we recognise the vital role structural engineers play in addressing some of today’s most pressing challenges around sustainability and climate change.
Developing creative and visionary solutions in the built environment can not only transform lives but also change the future for generations to come.
Making a positive impact on our world
To reflect the changing landscape, in 2022, the Structural Awards were revised to judge against four key attributes. The question asked to all entrants is now, “Does your project deliver great outcomes for People and Planet; advancing the Profession through innovative Processes?”
Teams must showcase not only sustainable structural solutions, but demonstrate their innovation, positive social impact and commitment to driving the profession forwards.
The Structural Awards deadline for this year is Monday 14 April 2025 17:00 BST. Explore our Structural Awards site to enter, and for expert advice from our judges on how to make your entry truly stand out.
A decade of Supreme Award winners
The Structural Awards winners represent some of the world’s most impressive structural engineering achievements. Amongst each cohort are one or two stand out submissions who go on to be awarded that year’s Supreme Award winner (previously known as the Structural Engineering Excellence Winner).
Looking back over the past 10 years, even in this short time, we can spot changes in engineering trends. Judges' comments have moved away from highlighting economy and expression, to rewarding winners for their impact on the community and sensitivity to natural surroundings.
