Primarily intended for application in areas of moderate/high seismicity for the majority of low/medium-rise, medium ductility class buildings (but also for use in the UK, where explicit consideration of seismic actions may be required) these examples provide simple design calculations for basic structural elements (steel and concrete) for most buildings within the scope of BS EN 1998.
Example 1 briefly introduces basic dynamics. Examples 2, 3 and 4 present the design of a reinforced concrete beam, column and shear wall respectively, while Examples 5–8 present the design of a steel beam, column, connection, and bracings respectively.
The examples offer design calculations that follow capacity design principles in BS EN 1998, and support the designer’s understanding of the code.
