On 16 October 2025, IStructE UAE, in collaboration with ICE and CARES, hosted a CPD event at Heriot Watt University Dubai focusing on sustainable construction steel and the importance of local regulations. This event was particularly special as it welcomed two distinguished leaders: Mohamad Khodr Al-Dah, President of IStructE, and David Porter, Vice-President and incoming President of ICE, as guests of honour.
The session highlighted the UAE’s pioneering constructional steel products regulation, the first in the world to mandate digital tracking and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for steel products.
Keynote presentations included Lee Brankley, CEO of CARES, who spoke on “Sustainability and decarbonisation of the steel industry – Why change now?”, and Craig Thackray, ICE UAE Fellow, who addressed regional sustainability considerations.
A dynamic panel discussion featuring experts from IStructE, ICE, CARES, and EMSTEEL Group explored challenges and opportunities in achieving Net Zero, with Iman Abi Saab, IStructE UAE Regional Chair, contributing valuable insights as part of the panel.
The event underscored the UAE’s leadership in advancing sustainable construction practices and provided a valuable platform for knowledge sharing among industry professionals.
