The Institution’s popular Embodied carbon basics eLearning course has had some minor updates to reflect evolving industry knowledge since it was first released.

Updated key definitions and language

We’ve updated several definitions and phrases that were no longer aligned with current industry standards. For instance, the way Net Zero is defined and described was revised to reflect a more widely accepted version. These updates help ensure that learners are developing an understanding that matches what is now being used in practice across the sector.

Carbon factors

The course gives rule-of-thumb carbon factors for many key materials; these have been updated to match the latest guidance in How to calculate embodied carbon 3rd edition. The full guide should be referred to for more detailed information of these factors.

Adding new learning content

Since the original release of the course, some new content has been launched to the industry that we have now picked up. One example is the link to our paper The efficient use of GGBS in reducing global emissions. Another is uncertainty factors, which we have added more depth to.

Ensuring assessment accuracy

The quizzes and in-video questions throughout the course are a key part of reinforcing learning, and we encourage course participants to use these to check their own understanding. These have been updated to align with the new taught content – as has the short CPD Test at the end of the course.
