The Institution has launched a new register that promotes Chartered Members with the high standard of professional skills required to serve as Expert Witnesses - that is professionals qualified to give an opinion on specialist technical matters to a court.

Unlike other registers, the IStructE Expert Witness register includes details of specialist structural engineering skills, helping clients and legal professionals access the specific expertise they require quickly and effectively. The register will also play an important role in promoting the skills and service of IStructE’s Chartered Members.

How to join the register

Registration is open only to Chartered Members of IStructE who can demonstrate, through assessment, the knowledge, experience and skills required to provide services as an Expert Witness.

Applicants pay a fee of £310, fill out an application form, and provide supporting documentation.

Applications are assessed by the Institution before a full assessment of skills and knowledge by The Academy of Experts.

Kristy MacDonald, IStructE Board Secretary and Head of Professional Conduct, said:

“Other Expert Witness registers exist, but the representation by IStructE members is low and their extensive specialist expertise is very difficult to capture - generic search terms like “engineer” and “structural engineer” are used, rather than the specialist areas within structural engineering which those seeking to appoint a structural engineer look for.

“The register combines high benchmark qualification routes and scrutiny of mandatory CPD returns for all registrants - linked to structural engineering specialist areas – to deliver a unique service.

“We are confident that the register will offer legal firms, clients and other experts much improved access to Members who have been assessed as having a high standard of professional skills as Expert Witnesses in specialist structural engineering areas.”
