SER Ltd was created in 2005 with the support of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). It is a wholly owned subsidiary of IStructE.
SER operates two registration schemes for the certification of design of building structures, one in Scotland on behalf of the Scottish government, and one in Jersey for the State of Jersey. The Board therefore works to ensure the safety standards set by these relevant legislative bodies are followed in the structural design of buildings.
Norman Train, Chair of the SER explains: “Candidates will need to possess knowledge of UK building standards as the Board of Directors ensures the ongoing strategic integrity of SER Schemes and oversees and safeguards SER’s success.”
“As such, being a Board member demands the need to exercise independent judgement, and with a commitment of just 8-10 days per year, Board members make a tangible difference to structural safety in a manageable way.”
SER Ltd holds four board meetings a year, and the contractual term for Board members is three years, with the possibility of renewal for a further three years.
Candidates should be a professional member of a built environment membership organisation such as IStructE, ICE, Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS), Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), The Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), or Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).
