The third webinar of the Modern uses of timber series focuses on hybrid structures.

Due to the current environmental drivers, an increasing number of tall and complex buildings being conceived that incorporate mass timber, either for the entirety of the structural frame or in parts of hybrid structures. This means that timber structures are being designed and delivered at a pace that can potentially go beyond current levels of knowledge and the competency of fire safety engineers.

The 2022 Modern uses of timber e-conference saw an expert panel introducing good practice in the engineering of structural timber, with presentations investigating advances in its use, its potential, fire safety and durability.

The third webinar on the series focuses on hybrid structures.

Reasons to watch

  • Discover the designing principles and codes for tall and hybrid timber constructions

  • Learn innovative ways to use structural timber, with a case study showcasing an iconic hybrid timber building

Speakers

Ricky McLain, Senior Technical Director, WoodWorks

Ricky is WoodWorks’ on tall mass timber buildings, providing analysis and guidance on architectural, fire and life safety, and structural design topics. He supports the AEC community and guides the development of education and resources related to tall mass timber buildings in the U.S. He also has experience in lead engineer roles related to structural design, project management and construction administration.

Dmitri Jajich, Director of Structural Engineering, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill

Dmitri has worked on projects ranging in scale from the World’s Tallest Building to a single-storey residence. Working in partnership with SOM’s architectural teams and other architects and artists, Dmitri has delivered projects characterised by elegantly integrated structural design, with an emphasis on clear, hierachical structural expression and carefully crafted details.

Robert Jackson, Associate Principal, Fast + Epp

Robert is a designer with expertise in timber, steel and concrete in both Canada and the US. Robert offers a unique skill set in the structural engineering community due to his background as a carpenter which has led to his specialisation in mass timber design. Robert has contributed to the success of many innovative tall timber projects across North America, including the TallWood House at Brock Commons, and The Arbour.

Bernhard Gafner, Partner, ASPECT Structural Engineers

Bernhard is a licensed carpenter and timber engineer with over 20 years' industry experience. He has led many projects in various countries around the globe. Even though his expertise is in timber or timber hybrid structures, he is accomplished in all major building materials.
