As designers facing the climate emergency, our goal is to minimise the embodied carbon in our solutions. This can involve using new, lighter, eco-friendly materials or using less of traditional materials. However, how does this approach impact the performance of our buildings?
This lecture focusses on how ‘using less’ can change the design focus so that performance under dynamic loading, for example walking, becomes the governing design criteria.
The following topics are covered in this lecture:
-
Brief introduction to current design methods for the dynamic performance of floors
-
How current guidance sits with lighter weight solutions
-
Case studies of lower carbon structures
