Entry information

The Student Challenge is open to projects from students around the world.

Eligibility requirements

  • The competition is open to students enrolled in any undergraduate civil engineering degree, structural engineering degree or similarly titled course. Student memberships with the Institution of Structural Engineers is mandatory

  • All JBM-accredited undergraduate degree courses meet this requirement.

  • Entries must be based on a significant group project completed as part of their studies, with has a minimum group size of three and a maximum group size of 12.

  • The project must have a structural heart eg a significant component to the range of solutions considered in the project is structural in nature

  • Typically this will be the last, large multidisciplinary (at least in the sense of Civil Engineering disciplines) group project undertaken on a degree course, in the penultimate or final year.

  • The entry team can include some or all members of the original project group.

  • The entry team is responsible for producing the two judged components of the submission.

  • Interdisciplinary teams are welcome and may include architects, designers, and surveyors alongside engineers

Submission requirements

Each entry must include:

Project presentation – A video or audio recording (max 3 minutes). The audio or video submission must be in a common format eg MP3, AVI, MOV, MP4, and openable without specialist software on both Windows and Apple computers. 

Project summary – Up to three A3 pages of text and/or graphics (minimum font size: 12pt). Maximum 1,500 words.

Project poster requirement - To provide context for the judging panel, each entry must include a project poster produced as part of the group design project for their degree programme.

  • If a poster was not created as part of the project, an equivalent document (eg, a slide deck) is acceptable.

  • The poster or alternative document will not be judged as part of the Student Challenge.

  • The main design project report (typically used for academic assessment) is not an acceptable alternative.

    IMPORTANT: It is the responsibility of the entry team to ensure they have the right to include the project poster or alternative document in the submission.

The Student Challenge 2026 entry form

A video or audio recording (max 3 minutes) in a common format (MP3, AVI, MOV, MP4) that can be opened on both Windows and Mac without specialist software.
Up to three A3 pages of text and/or graphics (minimum font size: 12pt). Maximum 1,500 words.
Each entry must include a project poster from the group design project. If no poster was created, an alternative (e.g., slide deck) is acceptable.
