A technical talk on the challenges overcome when caves were identified whilst tunnelling for a railway line in Slovenia.

During excavation of the twin tunnels on Slovenia's new Divača–Koper railway line, 91 previously unknown karst caves were discovered – some hundreds of metres long, others permanently flooded or filled with unstable clay and collapsed blocks. This webinar looks at how the design team responded in real time: what the ground actually revealed, how the caves were investigated and modelled in 3D, and how four large reinforced concrete arch bridges with spans of 25 to 45 metres were designed and built to carry the tunnels across the voids.

Peter Jemec
Peter Jemec is a civil engineer and Regional Partner at Elea iC. With over 20 years of experience on major infrastructure projects in Slovenia and abroad, he specialises in the design of conventional underground excavation and support in all ground types, together with design and geotechnical supervision. He is the technical project lead and project manager for the tunnels on the Divača–Koper second track – six single-track tunnels totalling 20.5 km, or 37.4 km including service and emergency exit tunnels.
