Course Overview
Founded in 1992 by Colin Davies, this highly sought-after course has guided candidates toward chartership for over three decades. The programme was subsequently coordinated by Stephen Vary (who taught from 2002 and managed administration from 2010 to 2024) and is now managed by Simon Leung, who took over administration in 2024.This course delivers the essential guidance, strategies, and technical insights required to approach the IStructE Chartered Membership exam with total confidence.

Speakers

Associate Professor, London South Bank University

Simon is an Associate Professor of Structural Design at London South Bank University (LSBU). Simon is a chartered structural engineer with 20 years of combined industrial and academia experience. He is a senior leader in developing the degree apprenticeship programme that attracts high-calibre candidates from across the sector. He is deeply involved in professional engineering institutions, having served as past chair of IStructE, North Thames Regional Group in 2020, past exam marking examiner and PRI reviewer, as a former Regional Executive Board Member and Diversity and Inclusion Champion for the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). He is the administrator and the key contact on this course.

Project Director, Mott MacDonald

Structural Engineer and Multidisciplinary Design Lead with 28 years of experience and a strong background working on a wide range of building projects in many industry sectors. He has worked closely with Architects, Clients and Contractors to deliver practical, buildable solutions including extensive modifications to existing buildings. With responsibilities for managing large design teams, including internal and external specialists, he is well-practiced at developing complex designs from concept to construction. Keen interest in reducing embodied carbon and using modern methods of construction and the development of platform DfMA systems.

Technical Principal, Mott MacDonald, Affiliated Lecturer at Cambridge University

Roger has worked at small and large consultancies on a broad variety of project types from sculptures and domestic extensions through to multistorey office and timber framed schools. The project Roger is most proud of is the Harry Potter Visitors centre at Leavesden, when he had to ask the question, “how heavy is this dragon?...”. He now works at Mott MacDonald in Cambridge, recent projects include a French Ligua 1 training facility and hotel under seismic loadings, boarder control facilities in Dover and his fair share of RAAC inspections.

Principal Lecturer, University of Hertfordshire

Dr Tim Sands did a first degree in Engineering Geology and Geotechnics and then worked for a large civil engineering company for 6 years, mainly in offshore platform foundation design and installation around the world, as well as onshore ground improvement in the UK. Tim then became a lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire teaching soil mechanics, foundation design, and engineering geology to civil engineering students. He did a PhD on pile/soil interaction in swelling London Clay using an instrumented model pile. He has also taught geology, hydrogeology, geomorphology, geoenvironmental engineering and natural hazards to geographers and environmental managers. Tim is a Chartered Civil Engineer and has taught foundation design on the IStructE course since 2004.

Associate Director, WSP

Jennifer is a Chartered Structural Engineer with over 13 years of experience in the design, appraisal, refurbishment and adaptive reuse of complex building structures. Her project portfolio spans the hospitality, commercial office, heritage, residential and mixed-use sectors, ranging from feasibility studies and concept design through to detailed design and construction-stage support. Jennifer has a particular interest in unlocking value from existing assets and the engineering challenges associated with refurbishment and adaptive reuse. She has delivered guest lectures on these topics at both London South Bank University (LSBU) and Brunel University, sharing practical industry experience with the next generation of structural engineers.
