This technical session will provide a briefing on the management of serious structural risks relating to The Wedgewood Institute.

Over the course of 2025, GCA Consulting managed serious structural risks relating to The Wedgewood Institute, a listed building in Stoke. Managing Director James Thomson will share the challenges associated with the project, including collapse of part of the building during demolition works.

As well as the structural considerations, he will cover the wider social context for the failure, the statutory processes involved, risk management, optioneering processes and impact of individual behaviours and group dynamics during the works.

This case study encapsulates the role of the Structural Engineer in complex and challenging situations.

James Thomson, CEng
