Structural engineers can have a transformative effect on people’s lives and improve their resilience to shocks in disaster-prone areas, however, there are many practical and ethical considerations. In this webinar, expert speakers from around the world share case studies to showcase their experience in the sector, with particular focus on:
retrofitting houses and schools
engineering new permanent low-carbon housing constructed from timber and bamboo
designing new confined masonry housing for highly seismic areas
Learn what responsible development means in the context of the humanitarian sector
Gain an understanding of appropriateness of materials used within the humanitarian sector
Discover how humanitarian projects are implemented in a wide range of locations around the world
Engineers who have an interest in humanitarian and international development projects and want to get more involved in supporting humanitarian projects responsibly
Engineers already actively engaged in the sector and wishing to learn the latest trends in the sector
Wider built-environment professionals involved in projects addressing the climate emergency
Rosie is an earth construction enthusiast, with a wealth of experience leading teams in designing and constructing beautiful, innovative, and low-carbon buildings across East Africa. After contributing to the development of standards for adobe block construction in Rwanda, in her current role she is now implementing the work through the design and construction of affordable housing.
Luis is a civil engineer from the Colombian National University, and he holds a master’s degree in civil engineering from Los Andes University, Colombia. He heads technology at Base Innovation Centre, Base Bahay Foundation, Philippines. With 23 years' experience in bamboo structures, he contributed to Colombian, Peruvian, Ecuadorian, and ISO bamboo construction standards.
As a trained architect, Tom worked from 1997 to 2018 in the humanitarian sector, specialising in earthquake-resistant post-disaster reconstruction through the use of locally appropriate materials and low-tech construction methods, with a particular focus on knowledge transfer and training of workers. He worked for extended periods of time in Rwanda, Ethiopia, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, Haiti and Ecuador. Tom owns a practice and has been technical advisor for post-disaster reconstruction to the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit SHA of The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation SDC for the past 20 years.
Liva has over 18 years of experience working with promoting resilient housing for new and existing homes in the Philippines, Indonesia and Nepal.
Seb is an Associate Structural Engineer working in Arup London. He has significant experience on structural and seismic engineering projects in humanitarian and developing world contexts. He specialises in delivering appropriate, sustainable, resilient and affordable schools and housing in seismic areas, and he has provided remote and in-country technical support and training on reconstruction strategies and structural designs to the Shelter Cluster and international NGOs after many emergencies.
