This course will provide engineers with the confidence to work with listed buildings, balancing protection of building fabric while managing safety.

The course will look at a history of materials, principles of conservation engineering, statutory frameworks and surveys. Delegates should be prepared to ask questions, put forward their own examples and discuss the merits of different approaches.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the course, you should be able to

  • Recognise the legislative framework that surrounds listed buildings and how that translates to conservation best practice.

  • Work practically within that framework, balancing safety against preservation of building fabric.

  • Discuss the opportunities and risks of, sometimes fragile, buildings with clients and design teams.

  • Identify a range of different materials found in buildings earlier than 1930, how they work and typical defects.

  • Justify when to repair/strengthen and when to remove/replace.

Intended for

  • Senior engineer/Team leader/Manager

  • Business leader/Director (including SMEs)
