The course will look at the principles of conservation engineering, the history of material use, statutory frameworks and practical surveys, using case studies to illustrate the principles.
By the end of the course, you should be able to
Recognise the legislative framework that surrounds listed buildings and how that translates to conservation best practice
Work practically within that framework, balancing safety against preservation of building fabric
Discuss the opportunities and risks of working with listed buildings with clients and design teams
Identify a range of different materials found in buildings earlier than 1930, how they work and typical defects
Justify when to repair/strengthen and when to remove/replace
