The course will provide a practical introduction to data acquisition for structural condition monitoring and for use in live asset management projects.

Using contextualised examples, attendees will learn the basic principles of data acquisition and instrumentation, signal processing and interpretation techniques. The course includes practical hands-on exercises, requiring attendees to first acquire data, and then complete analysis and interpretation using programming tools.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course you should be able to:

  •  Gather data using acoustic techniques and ground penetrating radar

  •  Appreciate how to interpret data using programming tools

  • Monitor the quality of existing concrete structures and understand deterioration​

  • Assess how well a concrete structure has been built

Trainers

Dr Victoria Edmondson

Victoria is a Chartered Structural Engineer with over two decades of experience spanning both academia and industry. Her recent work focuses on remote sensing technologies and digital platforms for monitoring infrastructure condition, with particular expertise in concrete deterioration.

She has led and collaborated on research projects with organisations including National Highways and Gatwick Airport, developing innovative, non-contact techniques for assessing asset health.

A Fellow of multiple professional institutions, Victoria is committed to advancing sustainable infrastructure through teaching, research, and professional engagement.


 

Professor James Martin

James is a geophysicist with extensive research experience, particularly in physical and chemical measurement systems, signal fidelity and its impact on subsequent data interpretation.

He has extensive signal processing and data analysis expertise, including the development and characterisation of fibre optic sensor measurement systems.
