This course introduces attendees to the first generation of Eurocodes, focusing specifically on the design of common structural elements according to Eurocode 2.

Attendees are introduced to the properties of concrete and learn about designing for durability and fire resistance. The course considers Eurocode 2 in relation to flexure, shear, axial load, and deflection. Attendees also learn how to use Eurocode 2 to design concrete beams, slabs, and columns.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, attendees should be able to:

  • Describe Eurocode 2

  • Design concrete for beams, slabs and columns

  • Determine cover for a typical element

  • Design elements for bending, deflection, shear and axial loads

Intended for

  • Graduate engineer

  • Mid-career engineer

Trainers

Emily Halliwell

Emily is a Senior Structural Engineer at The Concrete Centre, where she promotes efficient concrete design and construction. Her role includes contributing to the development of Eurocode 2 and providing technical guidance to designers. Prior to joining The Concrete Centre, Emily worked on a variety of challenging engineering projects, including stations, stadia, and commercial buildings. She is a Chartered Member of IStructE and a Chartered Environmentalist.

Marianna Micallef

Originally trained as an architect and civil engineer, Marianna holds an MSc in General Structural Engineering from Imperial College London (ICL). She spent six years conducting research in reinforced concrete, initially as a PhD candidate and later as a Research Associate at ICL. She also has over eight years’ experience in industry. Marianna joined the engineering team within The Concrete Centre in 2025 and is working on Eurocode 2 guidance as these resources are revised for the Second Generation of Eurocode 2.
