A technical webinar unearthing the geotechnical perspective of waterproof basement design and construction.

This webinar explores how geotechnical engineering input supports competent decision-making in basement waterproofing. It will examine how ground investigation data, groundwater conditions, soil behaviour and heave risk should be interpreted and integrated by structural engineers, waterproofing designers and other specialists to inform safe, durable and coordinated below-ground design. This session is part two of the on-going basement waterproofing webinar series.

Drawing on expert insights into the role geotechnical specialists play in waterproofing projects, the session will help structural engineers recognise the scope and limits of their own professional competence and design responsibility.

Reasons to attend

By the end of this webinar, you will be able to:

  • Recognise how geotechnical engineers, structural engineers and specialists should collaborate to manage risks and waterproofing strategies.

  • Understand the impact of groundwater and hydrostatic pressure on the structural integrity of basements and below-ground environments.

  • Identify the importance of soil and heave assessment data in informing basement waterproofing decisions.

Intended for

  • Structural engineers and built‑environment professionals interested in the design, assessment, and construction of basements and foundations.

  • Structural engineers in broader practice who encounter below‑ground structures and wish to deepen their technical understanding.

This webinar is part of a series. The first webinar Designing compliant waterproof basements: BS 8102:2022 in practice will take place Tuesday 15 September 2026.

Speakers

Chair: Alice Shrubshall Director, Buro Happold
Alice graduated from the University of Southampton with a degree in Civil Engineering and has built extensive experience across the UK and Middle East. She has contributed to major multidisciplinary projects including the Olympic Stadium Transformation, Battersea Power Station Phase 3, and Co-op Live Arena, alongside construction roles on projects in Southend-on-Sea and Doha. Alice specialises in delivering geotechnical designs for large basements, retaining structures, slope stability works, and foundation systems. Her expertise includes foundation reuse, repurposing, and instrumentation and monitoring for efficient design. She is Vice Chair of RoGEP and serves on the AGS Instrumentation and Monitoring Working Group.
Alex Nikolic Director, A-Squared Studio
Alex is a Chartered Civil Engineer with postgraduate degrees in Soil Mechanics and Interdisciplinary Design. He is a director of A-squared Studio, a niche geotechnical consultancy providing specialist support across urban redevelopment and infrastructure sectors. Alex is passionate about the integration of the geotechnical and structural engineering disciplines, with a particular interest in the field of soil-structure interaction. He is a strong advocate for embedding ground engineering throughout the entire design and construction life cycle.
Stuart Wagstaff Director, Soil Consultants
Stuart is a Chartered Geologist and Registered Ground Engineering Professional with over 30 years of experience in the ground investigation industry and has been director of Soil Consultants for nearly 20 years. He has advised on many complex and high-profile projects across the infrastructure and construction sectors, specialising in engineering geology, geotechnics, and ground risk management. Stuart is widely recognised for his technical expertise and practical approach to delivering successful ground engineering outcomes.
