This course supports structural engineers at all career stages in navigating the sustainability transition in the built environment sector by deepening their understanding of the sector’s evolving priorities and developing their readiness to lead in this transition.

Drawing on systems thinking and reflection on professional ethics, individual agency and collaborative approaches, attendees will learn to reframe sustainability as a core design principle – delivering long-term, socially responsible, and adaptable engineering solutions – and to drive cultural change within projects and organisations.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • Identify environmental, social and economic impacts of sustainable design decisions – including their interconnections, implications across asset lifecycles, and relevance to systemic risk

  • Articulate the case for early-stage multidisciplinary collaboration as a driver of sustainable outcomes

  • Recognise ecological and social resilience as core dimensions of structural engineering practice

  • Describe how professional ethics shapes structural engineers’ responsibilities in relation to sustainability

  • Develop practical strategies for advancing sustainability within individual practice and organisational culture

Intended for

Structural engineers and other professionals in the built environment at all levels who want to lead change in the industry.
