Explore the engineering behind structural glass, from fundamental design principles to the practical challenges and lessons learned from delivering complex glass structures.

The IStructE London Young Members Group is pleased to announce a technical talk on Structural Glass Engineering, exploring the journey from fundamental design principles through to the practical delivery of real-world projects. This session brings together two leading structural glass specialists who will share their expertise from both the theoretical and practical perspectives of structural glass engineering.

The first part of the session will focus on the theory and fundamentals of structural glass engineering, covering topics such as material behaviour, design philosophy, robustness, and key considerations when designing with glass.

The second part will explore the practical application of structural glass through the Manchester Town Hall case study, highlighting the challenges involved in delivering complex glass structures, including design coordination, fabrication considerations, installation challenges, and lessons learned.

Whether you are a student, graduate engineer, or experienced professional, this session will provide valuable insight into how engineers approach the design and delivery of innovative structural glass solutions.
There will be an opportunity for a joint Q&A session following the presentations.

Speakers

Chris O'Regan, FIStructE,

Chris O'Regan is a Chartered Structural Engineer with almost 40 years of experience delivering structural engineering solutions across a diverse range of projects, from music halls and heritage buildings to major sports stadia. He is widely recognised for his expertise in structural glass engineering and was the technical author of The Structural Use of Glass in Buildings (2nd Edition), published in 2014. With the forthcoming publication of Eurocode 10, the new code of practice for the design of structural glass elements, Chris will discuss how this guidance provides structural engineers with a robust framework for understanding the behaviour of glass as a structural material and its application in modern engineering.

Graham Coult

Graham Coult joined Eckersley O'Callaghan in 2004, the practice's founding year, and has over 25 years of experience in structural engineering. As Technical Director, he plays a leading role in shaping the practice's technical direction, design processes, and project delivery, while also leading its research and development programme. His work focuses on advancing structural glass engineering, sustainable design, and material reuse through close collaboration between industry and academia. Graham has secured research funding and led investigations into extending the service life of existing building materials, particularly through the refurbishment and reuse of insulated glazing units, with the aim of reducing embodied carbon and improving long-term building performance. During this session, Graham will present the Manchester Town Hall case study, providing practical insights into the challenges and lessons learned from delivering complex structural glass engineering projects.
