That reinforced concrete is considered by American engineers and architects to be suitable for the construction of chimneys may be gathered from the fact that during the past seven years one firm alone-the Weber Company, of Chicago-have erected nearly a thousand such chimneys in America, under the direction of some of the most able engineers and architects in that continent. I esteem it an honour and a very great pleasure to be afforded the opportunity of addressing the Concrete Institute. We have watched from the other side of the water the formation and development of this Institute with a great deal of interest, and we have hoped to see great and good work come as the result of its formation. I am not particularly familiar with all the details of the scope of the work of the Institute, but as I understand it, it is primarily engaged in the work of education, and I think that education is to-day the keynote in connection with the development of concrete.
