Synopsis
Incoming Institution President, Matt Byatt, reflects on his route into the structural engineering profession after leaving school at 16 with little idea of what career he wanted to pursue. Matt cites his unconventional journey as an example of why the profession must make itself accessible for anyone with the appropriate aptitude if it is to pre-empt future skills shortages. He also calls on Council to consider establishing a formal mentoring scheme to enable experienced engineers to better support their early-career colleagues.
Matt also shares his passion for developing a better safety culture; climate action; and promoting equality, diversity and inclusion within the profession.
