SIR,-The Standards Association of Australia having now published its Code for “Metallic Arc Welding in Steel Buildings,” the references to the Draft Code which were made in the paper “An Introduction to Welded Structures" require correction in view of the amendments to certain of the clauses as published.
It will be recalled that Mr. Walter M. Goodesmith, Graduate, was the winner of last year's scholarship, his design for a concrete church having been published in The Structural Engineer of March, 1933 (page 127). Mr. Goodesmith has now fulfilled his obligations by presenting to the Institution the thesis embodying the results of his Continental tour, which occupied seven weeks and covered some thirty cities and towns in seven countries.
It is only in the last decade that progress in the manufacture of cement and the resulting improvement in the strength of concrete have been matched by a corresponding advance in the manufacture of high class steel. Oberbaurat Dr. Fritz Emperger
