The practical nature of much of the engineer’s work renders him very conscious of the words Cost and Economy. Yet, familiar as these words are, the subject is not very prominent in engineering text books, or in papers before Engineering Institutions, and though this question of economy is fundamental to engineering design, even to-day cases are found where economy is related inappropriately to first cost. A joint meeting of the Institution of Structural Engineers and the British Section of the Societe des Ingenieurs Civils de France was held at 11 Upper Belgrave Street, London, S.W.1, on Thursday, 6th February, 1947, when a paper on “The Thermic Drilling of Concrete and Stone,” by M. Maurice Lebrun (translated by Mr. Peter Gerard), was presented.
