Discussion on The Design of the Structure For the New Terminal Building at Stansted Airport by G.J.

Mr P. A. Rutter (F) (Scott Wilson Kirkpatrick & Partners): I would like to compliment the authors on a very interesting paper, an interest which is generated by giving a clear insight into the development of the scheme from its inception. Often we are blessed, within our journal, with papers which are erudite, but this type of paper also excites the imagination. To be taken through the concept and led to the solution is entertaining, as well as instructive.

Correspondence on A Discussion of 'Yieldlines' in Unreinforced Masonry by R. Lovegrove

Mr A. N. Beal (M) (R. H. Thomason & Partners): Mr Lovegrove’s thoughtful paper is most welcome, because we cannot continue indefinitely with a method of masonry design which is not based on sound theory. However, he accepts a little too readily the proposition that the yieldline-based moment coefficients in BS5628, Table 9, have been verified by experimental results.

Requirements for slender concrete columns In our column of 15 November last, Mr A. D. Moore raised queries regarding apparent anomalies in the application of clauses 3.8.3.3, 3.8.3.4 and 3.8.3.5 of BS 8110 to the design of columns, on which Mr A. N. Beal commented further in the 24 January issue. We have received further substantial correspondence. Verulam
