The Structural Engineer

One Shelley Street, at King Street Wharf in Sydney, is a striking combination of beauty, function and sustainability. Featuring a magnificent external diagrid structure and internal atrium, the building has become a high quality visual landmark in Sydney's ommercial business district (CBD). The project includes 33 000m2 of commercial and retail space, overlying a previously constructed five-storey basement. The building comprises two blocks of mainly steel-framed construction, with the fully open atrium linked by stairs, bridges and cantilevered pod structures. This paper describes the project focussing on the structural analysis, design and construction. John Hewitt, MA(Cantab), MFireSafeEng, MIStructE, CEng Arup Alex Edwards, BE(Civil), MArch Arup
