If your qualification(s) are not accredited or recognised, you will need to undertake an academic assessment if you wish to proceed to becoming professionally qualified.

How does it work?
The academic assessment is a desk-top assessment carried out by our Academic Qualifications Panel (AQP). The AQP meet four times a year to carry out academic assessments and we would encourage you to have the academic assessment as soon as possible to ensure that you meet the academic requirements for your desired professional grade of membership.

How do I know if I need an academic assessment?
You need to apply for an Academic Assessment if you have a non-accredited degree, or qualification. Contact the membership team with the details of the degree you studied, including the course name, university name and dates of study and copy of degree certificate if you unsure about your academic qualification.

Documents required for an academic assessment
We will need a certified true copy of your qualification, including your certificate and transcripts and/or marksheets. If any of the documents are not in English, you also need to send us a countersigned English translation. If you hold a PhD, we will also require an abstract of your thesis.

How to certify your documents
To certify a photocopy of your certificate and transcript, your university lecturer, a senior member of your employing company, a solicitor or an IStructE member needs to write the following on the copy (in blue or black pen directly onto the proof of academic qualification):

"I confirm this to be a true copy of this applicant's qualification"

They'll also need to provide the following:
  • Signature
  • Name (clearly printed)
  • Date
  • Employing organisation or university
  • Position
  • A contact telephone number or email address
  • IStructE membership number (if applicable)
How to apply
Please contact the Membership Team to submit your application.

Your application will then be put before the Academic Qualifications Panel (AQP) who will advise you on whether your qualifications have been deemed satisfactory, or whether you will need further learning to fully meet the Institution's academic requirements for professional membership.
