How does the Technical Report Route work?

The Technical Report Route comprises four key stages, providing a structured pathway for applicants to demonstrate that they have met the requirements for membership.

The Technical Report Route for Chartered/Associate Membership, and Incorporated Membership comprises four key stages that guide applicants through the assessment process:

1. Initial Academic Assessment

You will need to submit:

  • Application for admission or transfer to Graduate Membership (Form G)

  • CV

  • Certified copies of your qualification certificates and transcripts

  • Initial Assessment fee

The Academic Qualifications Panel will review your application, qualifications, and professional background to determine whether the Technical Report Route is the most appropriate pathway for you.

2. Synopsis Submission

If your application is approved, you will be invited to submit:

  • Form TR IM (for the Technical Report Route to Incorporated Membership) or Form TRR-M (for the Technical Report Route to Chartered or Associate Membership)

  • A 400 to 700-word synopsis outlining your proposed Technical Report

  • The Synopsis Fee

The Panel will review your synopsis and, if satisfied that it meets the required standard, approve it for the next stage of the Technical Report Route.

3. Technical Report submission

Once your synopsis has been approved, you will be invited to prepare and submit your full Technical Report. You must also provide:

  • Your completed Technical Report

  • A completed self-checklist

  • The Assessment Fee

Technical Report requirements

  • The report must be based on one or two projects for which you had significant responsibility.

  • It must demonstrate your engineering knowledge against the required output standards at Master's level (MIStructE/AIStructE) or HND level (IMIStructE).

  • The report should meet the following length requirements:

    • Route A (Chartered Membership): 3,000 to 5,000 words

    • Route B (Chartered Membership): 5,000 to 10,000 words

    • Incorporated Membership Technical Report Route: up to 5,000 words

Your report must clearly demonstrate:

  • Your personal contribution to the project(s)

  • Evidence against each of the required output standards

Any material included in the report that was not prepared by you must be clearly identified and appropriately referenced.

4. Technical Report Interview

If your written submission is accepted, you will be invited to attend a one-hour interview with two assessors.

During the interview, the assessors will discuss your Technical Report, explore your technical understanding, and assess how your knowledge and experience align with the required academic standards.

Successful completion of the interview concludes the Technical Report Route and enables you to proceed to the professional review process for your chosen membership grade.

Route B Appraisal for Technician

You will need to submit:

  • Application for admission or transfer to Student in Employment Membership (Form SE)

  • A detailed CV

  • A portfolio of projects you have undertaken, demonstrating your technical experience and providing evidence of your knowledge and understanding.

Standards you are required to meet:
Please refer to the following documents:
