Guidance for structural engineers responding to dangerous structures.

A joint publication by the Temporary Works Forum (TWf), the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) Safety, Health & Wellbeing Panel, and the Institute of Demolition Engineers (IDE).

This new information sheet provides clear, practical guidance for structural engineers who are called to assess and advise on dangerous structures - often in fast-moving, high-pressure situations involving emergency services, building control, and demolition specialists. It outlines how engineers should approach initial stabilisation, temporary works, exclusion zones, utility isolation, decision-making, documentation, and communication under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations and within the procedural framework of BS 5975.

Drawing on the collective experience of temporary works engineers, structural engineers, and demolition experts, the document distils common challenges and offers prompts to support competent, proportionate, and safe emergency response. It also highlights essential references and legal responsibilities relevant to managing structural risk during incidents.

The sheet is intended to support engineers in delivering calm, professional judgement when responding to damaged or unstable structures, ensuring that public safety remains the overriding priority.
