Arthur Coates presents his research on tall timber structures.

In 2019, after an exacting process that required written submissions, budget plans and an interview, Arthur Coates was awarded the Pai Lin Li Travel Grant for his proposed investigation of tall timber structures.

Within the context of rapidly evolving regulations surrounding tall building design in the UK, Arthur travelled to Canada, the USA and Norway to explore the perceived differences in regulatory frameworks.

Arthur studied the drivers for the development of tall timber buildings in these countries, the preconceptions about the use of timber, and learnt about the technical challenges that face tall timber structural design.

Arthur's full report is available to download here.
