A presentation on the structural design of the award-winning stadium, including a look at the cable-net roof.

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium won the Institution’s ultimate accolade at the 2019 Structural Awards – the Supreme Award for Structural Engineering Excellence.

This presentation looks at aspects of the engineering innovation and ground-breaking use of long span elements.

Presenters from the Buro Happold team discuss how they eliminated 40% of the columns to provide open concourses and hospitality spaces, including a 30m x 20m conference space.

Reasons to watch:

  • Understand some of the key design challenges which were overcome to deliver an award-winning multi-use stadium
  • Gain knowledge on sports venue design and the design of several long span elements
  • Appreciate the structural design aspects which resulted in both the IStructE Long Span Structures and 2019 Supreme Award

Speakers

Rob Amphlett – Partner, Buro Happold
Rob is the UK Sports Sector Leader for Buro Happold and worked on the stadium for over ten years as Project Director. He is currently working with the Buro Happold Sports team to deliver a significant UK sports portfolio including projects for Everton Football Club with Meis Architects, the MCC at Lords cricket ground with Wilkinson Eyre Architects and Leicester City Football Club with KSS Architects.

Gillian Browning - Head of Structural Dynamics, Buro Happold
Gillian has a wealth of experience in the sports sector and advised the design team from early in the project. Highlights of her involvement included novel perception testing for habitable space within the roof structure and instigating an unconventional approach to designing the terraces for human comfort from crowd induced vibrations.

Paul Eddleston – Senior Engineer, Buro Happold
Paul works within the UK Sports team at Buro Happold. He worked as Project Engineer on the stadium with key roles on the cable-net roof design and South Stand primary steelwork as well as a two year role in the site design office.

Robert Jones – Senior Engineer, Buro Happold
Robert works within the UK Sports team at Buro Happold. He worked as Project Engineer on the stadium with several roles including foundations, bowl steelwork and pre-cast design, and a two year role in the site design office.
