Discover how Build It International has developed a livelihoods approach to community building.

Over the past 12 years, Build It International, a UK /Zambia NGO, has developed a livelihoods approach to community building that contributes to their overall Training into Work programme.

This recording briefly outlines the origins and growth of the charity and describe it’s current approach and programme in Zambia. It sets out the context including country profile and local construction sector. How the charity works with local communities, employers and Government is explored along with the main challenges and how these are addressed. These include involving women, raising skills standards, and promoting environmentally friendly design and material choices.

A livelihoods approach to construction in Zambia

Andrew Jowett OBE

CEO, Build It International
Andrew studied Geography before starting a career in international development at Save the Children UK. He first worked in the Horn of Africa, then Central America. Andrew became director of international charity Harvest Help (now Self Help Africa) before co-founding Build It International in 2007 with a small group of experienced international development professionals.
