This annual update provided an overview of the ongoing work carried out by two fibUK commissions and the fib model code.

fibUK: what’s happening? was organised by the UK Group of fib (The International Federation for Structural Concrete). The commissions instigated research on structural concrete and published industry guidance that went beyond what established codes could offer. Designers, contractors, academics, and clients gained an understanding of the latest fib developments.

Experts covered What’s happening on

Commission 1 by Jessica Sandberg
The presentation provided a summary of Commission 1 and specifically focused on the ongoing development of the State-of-the-art document, highlighting the current design approach adopted for integral bridges.

Commission 7 by Domenico Asprone
This presentation explored fib’s commitment to sustainability in concrete structures, shared ongoing activities within Commission 7, and discussed the expected outcomes of the Special Activity Group.

Fib Model Code for Concrete Structures by Stuart Matthews
The presentation introduced the historical development of the fib model code, provided a brief overview of the MC2020 contents, and illustrated the philosophical basis for MC 2020.

Speakers

Domenico Asprone, Professor of Structural Engineering at the University of Naples Federico II
Domenico is a Full Professor of Structural Engineering at the University of Naples Federico II. His research spans various areas in structural engineering and construction technology, focusing on sustainable design, BIM methodologies, resilience and robustness of structures against hazards, and sustainability of structural materials. He is currently the chair of the fib Commission 7 and the Special Activity Group on Sustainability.

Stuart Matthews, Chartered Structural Engineer
Stuart is a Chartered Structural Engineer, and Honorary Member of fibUK. He was Convenor of fib Task Group 10.1, the group within Fédération Internationale du Béton / The International Federation for Structural Concrete (fib) responsible for preparing the next edition of the fib Model Code for Concrete Structures (this project had the working title of fib Model Code 2020).

Jessica Sandberg, Chief bridge engineer at AtkinsRealis
Jessica is a Chief bridge engineer at AtkinsRealis with extensive experience in bridge management, design, and assessment on a variety of complex bridge structures in steel and concrete both in the UK and internationally. She has been co-convenor of the FIB Integral bridges working group since 2020 (WP 1.1.3). This working group is currently developing a state-of-the-art document outlining the different approaches toward integral bridges design that are adopted in different parts of the world.
