Engineers must be clear on their responsibilities regarding the performance of the structure in fire.

This on-demand course provides an accessible and flexible way to develop an understanding of the role they play in creating fire safe structures, and the principles of a good fire safety strategy.

It has been designed to support demonstration of compliance with regulatory frameworks in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. However, the principles may be relevant in other jurisdictions.

Course outline

  • Module 1 - Roles, responsibilities & requirements

  • Module 2 - Fire behaviour and safety strategies

  • Module 3 - Fire resistance, materials & testing (concrete, steel, steel composites and timber)

  • Module 4 - Design and insurance considerations for fire safe structures

Each module contains recorded presentations from expert contributors, self-assessment exercises and signposts further resources. In total the course will take circa 4 hours in duration to complete.

Learning outcomes

  • Appreciate the roles and responsibilities of the professionals involved in the fire performance of buildings, about statutory requirements they must meet, and the different compliance approaches they use.

  • Understand how developments in industry have necessitated the development of fire competency in structural engineers.

  • Learn about fire dynamics principles, how fire evolves in a building, and strategies for its prevention, detection, containment, suppression and evacuation.

  • Develop a greater understanding of dynamic fire principles that will allow you to work effectively with fire engineers.

  • Understand the behaviour of common construction materials under fire conditions, how fire resistance is measured and calculated, and how material selection influences fire performance, complexity and overall building safety.

  • Explore fire safety considerations for building design, including non-standard features that may affect fire performance.

  • Gain a perspective from building insurers on property safety.

Intended for

The course is ideal for structural engineers who want an introduction to the basics of fire engineering but will also consolidate knowledge and fill gaps for those with some experience. It may also be beneficial for fire engineers and building control officers seeking to understand the performance of structures in fire.
