This hybrid conference was dedicated to best practice in the early stages of adaptive reuse projects through assessment, appraisal and design decisions.

Understanding an existing structure is the starting point to any reuse or retrofit project. Effective assessment, investigation and appraisal are critical to evaluating and justifying the continued use of an existing building. Structural engineers therefore play a critical role in making the case for, and breaking down the barriers to, the transformation of more existing building stock in place of new build.

The Reusing existing buildings conference addressed how to establish the feasibility of a reuse project, assessment methods, tools and techniques, the implications of making early design decisions and risk considerations.

Watch below two highlight presentations from the conference, delivered by Claire Young, Sustainability Lead, Civic Engineers and Lukas Ziak, Senior Engineer, Eckersley O’Callaghan.
