Following the launch of Structural robustness and disproportionate collapse in buildings (second edition), aimed at shedding light on the current uncertainties around disproportionate collapse, this talk explores some of the key takeaways from the research included in the publication.
The speakers briefly discusses how the Eurocodes for timber, steel, concrete and masonry have been interpreted, and provides specific examples of how to calculate design tie forces of buildings, the building regulations and the definitions of ‘material change of use’ and ‘building work.’
A discussion on the structural performance of buildings, their design life and the best practices to assess their safety with respect to the Reliability Index concludes the lecture.
