The Associate-Membership exam is one of two essential elements you must complete to become an Associate-Member of the Institution. The other is the Professional Review interview.
You can attempt the exam before or after your interview - whichever option suits you best.
The exam requires you to consider the details of a construction project.
The details are presented in the format of a brief and proposed design solution passed to your design office by a Chartered Structural Engineer.
The exam is seven hours long.
You must answer one question from a choice of four. All questions have two sections and both parts must be satisfactorily answered to achieve a pass:
Section 1 (30% of total mark) tests your knowledge of structural engineering design practice, including drawing and detailing, and the conveying of design information on-site.
Section 2 (70% of total mark) establishes your familiarity with an incorporated engineer's normal responsibilities for managing and organising construction processes in a structural engineering office.
