Through this lecture, attendees will gain valuable insights into the guide's development, key principles, and its potential to shape future educational infrastructure projects across the region.

The guide is the result of collaborative research and shared experience aimed at improving educational infrastructure across Uganda, Rwanda, and the wider region. Far more than a set of recommendations, this guide shares practical knowledge and best practices to support architects, designers, engineers, and policymakers working across East Africa.

The Feilden Foundation

The Feilden Foundation provides skills and knowledge to enhance educational infrastructure across East Africa. Set up 20 years ago in memory of Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios (FCBS) partner Richard Feilden, the Foundation focuses on the design of school buildings in East Africa. With trustees who are experienced in education, engineering and architecture it has been responsible for many low cost innovative classroom designs. The Foundation has also produced and published guidance for climate-responsive design in East Africa and for the design and construction of schools.

Speakers

Meg is a qualified architect with interdisciplinary experience in the public, private and third sectors. She currently works in local government, working with multi-stakeholder groups to deliver active travel routes. As the primary researcher and co-author of the East African Schools Design Guide, Meg was instrumental in its development, launch and publication. She thoroughly enjoyed working alongside local architects, academics, and students in East Africa, learning from their experience and expertise.

Peter Clegg is a founding partner of the architectural practice, FCBS, and a trustee of the Feilden Foundation. FCBS has been at the forefront of low energy and regenerative design for nearly 50 years and is acclaimed nationally and internationally for its work in social and environmental architecture. FCBS have won a multitude of RIBA awards including the Stirling Prize for the design of the Accordia housing scheme in Cambridge. Peter has also been responsible for international projects in Canada, the USA, Cyprus, Bangladesh, and Rwanda.
