Exploring the future for bridge engineering: meeting the challenges of ageing assets and a changing climate.

Around the world, asset owners are confronting new and significant challenges. The combination of ageing assets, climate change and the heighted demand and reliance placed on our infrastructure systems means that in many countries we risk reaching a tipping point characterised by accelerating asset deterioration and loss of service. Building on work that he led as the Vice President of the Royal Academy of Engineering in UK and also in his leadership of the development of the Second-Generation Eurocodes, Steve will share his perspectives on the critical role of Engineers in meeting these challenges.

Steve will outline the key findings and recommendations of the recent RAEng report, ‘Reviving our Ageing Infrastructure’. He will discuss the evolution of the Eurocodes and how they have been extended to support the life-extension of existing structures. He will also share his perspective on the key role of innovation in digital technologies to support better decision making and the role of engineering judgement and the extent to which we can rely upon it.
