The Structural Engineer, Volume 41, Issue 3, 1963
Difficulties exist in sampling and testing cohesionless soils and in-situ tests for investigating the bearing capacity and settlement characteristics of these soils are considered. The standard penetration and Dutch cone types of penetrometer are dealt with and attempted correlations between these two tests are discussed. Hugh B. Sutherland
The paper describes tests to determine the strains throughout the length of reinforcement in a three-storey concrete column subject to bending at each storey. Other tests are described in which stresses in lap joints and in binders, both plain and helical, were determined. As a result of these tests it is suggested that worthwhile economies in binders and lapped bars are a possibility. J.M. Plowman
