Difficulties exist in sampling and testing cohesionless soils and in-situ tests for investigating the bearing capacity and settlement characteristics of these soils are considered. The standard penetration and Dutch cone types of penetrometer are dealt with and attempted correlations between these two tests are discussed. Hugh B. Sutherland
Just over three years ago, on lOth December 1959, our President, Mr. E. N. Underwood, presented his paper on multi-storey car parks, giving a very informative survey of the problem together with details of the car park at Bristol. The discussion which followed showed that there was considerable interest in the subject, but there was comparatively little practical experience of the problem. F.W. Gifford
