Climate Committee

The Climate Committee is the Institution’s focal point for climate leadership in structural engineering.

In an era where climate change is disturbing the balance of nature – thereby causing harm to people and to other life on our planet – structural engineers must be aware of the ways they should mitigate, and respond to, such changes.

Since 2019 the Institution has put Climate Emergency as a key strategic priority and at the same level as Structural Safety. The Climate Committee is the Institution’s focal point for climate leadership in structural engineering: bringing together practitioners who want to shape the profession’s response to climate change through practical guidance, influential thinking, tangible outputs and advocacy that helps shape the rules, not just the guidance. It aims to help members drive better outcomes in resilience, climate change mitigation and regenerative design, while strengthening the Institution’s international leadership, external voice and public benefit.

By combining strategic direction with delivery-focused Task Groups, the Committee aims to turn member expertise into visible outputs that strengthen the profession, support the Institution’s climate ambitions and maintain its international leadership voice.
