The Structural Engineer

The paper describes the application of the finite element method of analysis for the determination of deflection and moment values in rectangular slabs supported at the four corners. Two types of corner boundary conditions were investigated: simple supports and fixed supports. Various loading conditions were studied for three aspect ratios within the range 1 to 2. A method allowing for column slab interaction is described in the Appendix. J.D. Davies

The Informal Interdisciplinary Working Party of Engineering, Technology and Science Societies was set up with the purpose of defining areas of common interest between disciplines and debating such areas as seemed appropriate.

Mr. John M. Rolfe: ‘It is pleasing to see the use of Johansen’s yield line theory being given some publicity, since it’s power and versatility are not as widely appreciated as they deserve. However, there a few points on which I would like to comment.'

The Metric Panel, B/-/9, is keeping a general watching brief on progress in the construction industry as a whole, so as to act as BSI agent for monitoring and regulating the programme for the metrication of standards and Codes of Practice to ensure that the requirements of PD 6030 are met.

The paper describes different types of tension roofs and methods by which they can be analysed. The theories consider prestressed cable roofs as discrete systems having significant geometrical displacements. H.A. Buchholdt

A series of uniformly and eccentrically prestressed concrete beams was tested in combined bending and torsion, with ratios of bending moment to twisting moment varying from pure bending to pure torsion. In all, twenty-three prestressed beams and two plain concrete beams were tested. The deflections and strains due to bending and torsion were measured at selected points. Professor R.H. Evans and M.G.A. Kahalil
